What cookies DictArena uses and why.

1. What Are Cookies?

Cookies are small text files placed on your device by a website. They help the site remember your preferences and understand how you interact with it. DictArena also uses localStorage and sessionStorage — browser storage mechanisms that work similarly to cookies but are never sent to our servers automatically.

2. Strictly Necessary

These are required for DictArena to function. You cannot opt out of them.

dictarena_anonymous_id

localStorage · Persistent

A random ID that identifies your anonymous session. Used to enforce daily solo session limits without requiring an account.

dictarena_display_name

localStorage / sessionStorage · Persistent

Stores the display name you entered so you don't have to retype it on the next visit.

dictarena_country_code

localStorage · Persistent

Your auto-detected country code (e.g. 'FR') used to show your flag on leaderboards.

dictarena_access_token

localStorage · Until sign-out or expiry

JWT authentication token for registered accounts. Keeps you logged in across sessions.

dictarena_theme

localStorage · Persistent

Remembers your chosen UI theme (light or dark).

3. Analytics (Optional)

We use Vercel Analytics and Vercel Speed Insights to understand how players use the platform. These tools collect:

  • Page views per route
  • Country and device type (aggregated, not individual)
  • Core Web Vitals performance metrics

Vercel Analytics is privacy-friendly by design — it does not use third-party cookies or fingerprinting, and does not track individuals across sites. No data is sold to advertisers.

4. Payments

When you subscribe to a Pro or Family plan, you are redirected to Stripe for payment. Stripe may set its own cookies during the checkout process to prevent fraud and remember your payment method. DictArena has no control over Stripe's cookies. Please refer to Stripe's Cookie Policy for details.

5. Managing Cookies

You can clear browser storage and cookies at any time through your browser settings. Note that clearing strictly necessary items (such as your anonymous ID or display name) will reset your session limits and preferences.

Most browsers allow you to block third-party cookies. This will not affect DictArena's core functionality since we do not rely on third-party cookies for gameplay.

6. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Cookie Policy when we add new features or services. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page will always reflect the most recent version. Continued use of DictArena after any update constitutes your acceptance of the revised policy.
